Social Media Engagement: Don’t Sell
The other day I was reading an article on social media from SitePro News, 12 Social Media Rules of Engagement for Small Businesses.
It’s really a good article about engagement.
One of the rules struck me — Rule #2:
Don’t sell. Social media is social. People use it to relate to one another and just like you wouldn’t walk into a party and start pitching your wares, you shouldn’t hard-sell on social media, either. There are ways to get people talking about your products or services, but you have to tread softly or risk losing your audience.
How many times do you receive a Tweet or a Facebook update that really isn’t “engagement” instead they are just pitching their product or service. If you read through the whole article you will soon learn that Social Media is a tool for your business.
I think all the pitching that takes place is one of the reasons I don’t like using Twitter. I do like Facebook and I find it to be more sociable than Twitter. Haven’t investigated Pineterest yet, but will be doing that shortly as it appears to be the “hot” new social media site.
Often times I hear, I need more “likes” on my Facebook business page. But what they seem to be missing is that even though they post something, they are not engaging but they are “pitching” or “selling” and then out of frustration, they give up.
As I have learned over the years, nothing comes quickly on the Internet.
